Ferdinand de Saussure spent a significant part of his academic career in Switzerland, and the lectures that formed the basis of Course in General Linguistics were delivered at the University of Geneva between 1907 and 1911.
Publication Context
- Saussure never published these lectures himself.
- After his death in 1913, his students : Charles Bally and Albert Sechehaye, compiled their notes, resulting in the landmark book Course in General Linguistics (1916).
Because these lectures were taught exclusively in Geneva, that location is historically tied to the formation of modern linguistic theory.
