The University of Punjab was established in Lahore in 1882 to reduce the burden on the University of Calcutta. At that time, the University of Calcutta was the only university in the region, and the establishment of the University of Punjab aimed to provide educational opportunities to a broader population and to alleviate the strain on Calcutta University.
